Sherman Deng’s practice focuses on data privacy and cybersecurity compliance. He represents domestic and multinational clients in matters regarding bank finance, tourism and the internet, and manufacturing industries in matters regarding data governance, incident response and cross-border data transfer. He is a director of the Shanghai Information Network Security Administration Association.
Before joining the firm, Mr Deng was a vice president and senior counsel of Marriott International, where he handled several high-profile data and cybersecurity incidents. He played a leadership role in preparing and implementing Marriott’s cybersecurity-related compliance playbooks and policies, and incident response plans; advising internal clients on the Multilevel Protection Scheme, data localisation and cross-border data transfer projects; setting up cross-functional cybersecurity teams; building privacy and cybersecurity baselines; and managing other aspects of the privacy life cycle in China.
Before moving in-house at Marriott, Mr Deng had worked for nearly 10 years as an associate at the Shanghai and New York offices of White & Case, during which he was exposed to banking, M&A and industry knowledge in pharmaceutical, mining and metals, biotech and e-commerce platform businesses.
