A major challenge I have faced is gender stereotypes. As a female lawyer under 40, over the years I regularly felt that I had to prove that I could do as much as or better than a male lawyer (not only to male colleagues but also clients). In a meeting room where you are the only female lawyer it may sometimes be challenging, especially with the older generation of male clients and colleagues, to be seen as equal and get their full attention. My promotion to counsel has certainly helped.
My greatest career accomplishment is the creation of the networking group Women in Privacy six years ago. This group is for female data protection and privacy professionals and aims to provide a platform for high-level discussion of data protection and privacy law developments, to facilitate and strengthen networking among women privacy professionals, and to mentor and promote the advancement of women in the field.
