Practice profile

Big-hitter Jones Day likes to take a proactive approach to the rapidly evolving cyberlaw industry, focusing on helping clients stay up to date with ever-changing rules and regulations. And Jones Day takes a multidisciplinary approach to its data offering, drawing on expertise from its transactions, compliance and strategic counseling, cyber-incident response, regulatory investigations and litigation practices to provide well-rounded and pragmatic data advice.

Jones Day’s global reach helps too. With expertise and offices across the globe, the firm is well placed to handle data breaches that span multiple data protection regimes – and all the regulatory burdens that such an incident entails. Its international approach, combined with lawyers experienced in advising clients in a multitude of sectors, means there are few data issues the firm can’t tackle.

Leading individuals

Dan McLoon in Los Angeles and Lisa Ropple in Boston lead a cybersecurity and privacy practice composed of 37 other partners, while Undine von Diemar coordinates the European practice from Munich. McLoon and Ropple in particular have significant data breach experience, while von Diemar has plenty of experience in data protection issues involved in M&A – most notably in technology transactions. Mauricio Paez in New York has a strong reputation for advising Fortune 100 companies.

Work highlights

Jones Day was key in advising on numerous deals in the tech sector in 2021. Partners Robert Profusek and Dotun Obadina advised Huntington in closing this deal.

Jones Day also counts a range of household names among its client list. It has defended credit rating agency Experian in multiple consolidated actions in the US, and advised IBM on privacy laws in Europe and the US.
