There is still a bias among some that women are less competent in the technology field (and not just in law) and due to the under-representation of women in management levels and in the government, some clients may be prejudiced and believe that male attorneys are more effective in resolving any issues, including with the applicable data protection and security governmental authorities.

Advice to young female lawyers: regardless of your practice areas, keep up to date with the latest cases and news and prognosticate future implications for clients. There is a significant focus on data/privacy/cybersecurity in the news, especially with the enactment of new laws and regulations and growth in the collection, access and usage of data. In order to proactively provide advice to clients, aspiring female data/privacy/cybersecurity professionals should actively track relevant legal issues and news that may affect their practice area and clients, and seek to understand their clients’ businesses, including by keeping an open dialogue with both the clients’ legal and technical teams regarding their data compliance plans and any privacy and security concerns.
