I really enjoy the diversity of issues that cross my desk – no two days are ever the same. The world of privacy is also changing rapidly and it is fun to keep pace.
With respect to privacy, the focus on privacy by design will continue to expand the involvement of privacy professionals in many different aspects of the business. Evolving technologies and social media will also continue to pose challenges to compliance professionals, particularly privacy professionals. I think the partnership between IT security and privacy professionals will continue to grow.
I look for external counsel that has a strong global network and can provide clear, pragmatic and timely advice. As I can read the law myself, I value the additional insight and resources that can be brought to bear by our external advisers.
I am most proud of my willingness to take chances in my career. I have clerked with the Federal Court of Canada, and worked in both private practice and in-house roles. I have used my litigation experience (wherein I specialised in securities, antitrust and employment litigation) as a springboard into legal compliance and privacy roles.
